Women in Ministry Series — Lesson One: Biblical Hermeneutics: Learning to Interpret God’s Word Correctly

Before we can honestly examine the difficult and often controversial passages concerning women in ministry, we must first answer a more foundational question: How does God expect us to interpret His Word?

In Lesson 1 of our Women in Ministry Series, we begin not with conclusions, but with the principles of sound biblical interpretation. Scripture is perfect—but interpreters are not. That is why believers are commanded to accurately handle the Word of Truth rather than allowing tradition, culture, personal opinion, or isolated verses to determine what the Bible means.

We’ll explore the importance of context, the difference between interpretation and application, and the biblical method of Isagogics, Categories, and Exegesis (ICE)—understanding the historical setting, examining the whole counsel of God, and drawing the intended meaning from the text itself.

Using familiar passages such as Philippians 4:13, Jeremiah 29:11, Matthew 18:20, and Romans 8:28, we’ll see how easily Scripture can be misunderstood when removed from its context.

And before we eventually examine passages such as 1 Timothy 2 and 1 Corinthians 14 concerning women, we establish an important commitment: our goal is not to prove what we already believe—our goal is to discover what God’s Word actually says.

This lesson lays the foundation not only for understanding women in ministry, but for studying every doctrine in Scripture with accuracy, humility, and dependence upon the Holy Spirit.
