🔥 THE LIVING WATER SAID, “I THIRST” | The Cross of Jesus Christ

In this message, we continue our study of the seven sayings of Jesus Christ from the Cross, looking closely at the incredible grace, compassion, suffering, and victory revealed in His final words.

We begin with the dying thief and our Lord’s promise, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:43)—a powerful picture of salvation by grace through faith. The thief had nothing to offer, no works to perform, and no opportunity to change his past. He could only believe, reminding us of the power of Jesus Christ to save anyone who comes to Him.

We then look at our Lord’s compassion toward His mother and John, and the remarkable fact that even while enduring the tremendous suffering of the Cross, Jesus Christ was still caring for others.

From there, we come to perhaps the most heartbreaking cry from the Cross:

“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” — Matthew 27:46

Jesus Christ was bearing our sins in His own body and experiencing the judgment that belonged to us. He was forsaken so that we would never be forsaken.

Then comes the powerful fifth saying:

“I thirst.” — John 19:28

The One who offered mankind Living Water willingly thirsted on the Cross. His physical thirst revealed His true humanity, fulfilled Scripture, and points us toward an incredible spiritual truth: Jesus Christ thirsted so that those who believe in Him would never experience the eternal thirst of separation from God.

And ultimately, everything leads us toward the victorious declaration:

“It is finished!” — John 19:30

The work of salvation was complete. Nothing could be added to it, and nothing could be taken away from it. It was—and always will be—a matter of GRACE.

He was forsaken → so we would never be forsaken.

He experienced judgment → so we could receive grace.

He thirsted → so we could receive Living Water.

He died → so we could have eternal life.
