Why God Never Told You to Like Everyone

Mar 13, 2026    Pastor Robert R. McLaughlin

Most people think love in the Christian life is about emotions, personality, or simply liking people. But the Bible teaches something far deeper.

In this message, we explore the powerful biblical doctrine of impersonal (agape) love — the professional love of the Christian that comes from spiritual growth, Bible doctrine in the soul, and the filling of the Holy Spirit.

Personal love is selective. It depends on attraction, chemistry, and personal preference. But the love God commands is different. It is a virtue-based love that allows a believer to handle difficult people, enemies, criticism, and injustice without losing inner happiness.

The Word of God reveals that true love is not built on emotion. It is built on spiritual integrity, humility, and a relationship with God through doctrine. When a believer develops this kind of love, they gain the ability to:

• Love their enemies

• Handle gossip and criticism

• Maintain inner peace when wronged

• Avoid bitterness and revenge

• Grow spiritually through undeserved suffering

The Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 5:14, “For the love of Christ controls us.” When a believer develops personal love for the Lord through Bible doctrine, that love becomes the motivation for living the Christian way of life.

This message explains the difference between personal love (phileo) and impersonal unconditional love (agape) and why agape love is the only love that can truly solve problems in life.

If you have ever struggled with difficult people, betrayal, gossip, or conflict, this teaching will show you how God designed the believer to overcome it.

Because the greatest freedom in the Christian life comes when your happiness is no longer controlled by how others treat you.
