When Life Isn’t Fair: How God Uses Injustice to Prepare You

Jan 28, 2026    Pastor Robert R. McLaughlin

Genesis 39–40 — Joseph & God’s Timing

This message teaches that God’s timing—not circumstances—determines spiritual growth, promotion, and prosperity. Using Joseph’s life, the pastor explains that God often uses adversity, injustice, and humiliation as tools to prepare believers for future greatness.

Key themes include:

1. Good Timing vs. Bad Timing

·      Good timing = life synchronized with God’s will, plan, and purpose.

·      Bad timing = life out of sync due to rejection of God’s Word (in perception, application, or attendance).

·      True success depends on alignment with God’s timing, not personal plans.

2. Joseph’s Training Through the Pit and Prison

Joseph goes through multiple “pits”:

·      Betrayal by family

·      Slavery

·      Temptation

·      False accusation

·      Imprisonment (injustice)

Each pit is part of God’s preparation—not punishment.

3. Prosperity Is Not Circumstantial

Joseph prospered:

·      As a slave

·      In prison

·      Under injustice

Because prosperity comes from God, not favorable conditions.

4. Passing Repeated Tests

Joseph is tested in:

·      People testing (betrayal, jealousy)

·      Prosperity testing

·      Temptation

·      Injustice

·      Authority and humility

Failing a test means repeating it. Passing it leads to spiritual acceleration.

5. Injustice Is a Tool for Promotion

God allows injustice to:

·      Enforce humility

·      Build character

·      Train for leadership

·      Develop dependence on grace

Complaining or bitterness is taught to be blasphemy against God’s timing, while adapting in faith leads to blessing.

6. Leadership Is Formed Through Humility

True greatness requires:

·      Being under authority

·      Serving

·      Enduring suffering for blessing

·      Learning to be a “slave to doctrine”

God promotes step by step—often through suffering.

7. Personal Sense of Destiny

Believers must develop:

·      Inner stability

·      Trust in God’s plan

·      Objectivity

·      Freedom from bitterness and reaction

Joseph’s faithfulness in unjust conditions prepares him for future rulership.

God's timing for Joseph requires a second "pit" experience.
