Why Broken Promises Hurt So Much (Biblical Truth)

Feb 17, 2026    Pastor Robert R. McLaughlin

This message teaches about one of life’s major problems: the conflict between promises and integrity. Using Proverbs 29 and other passages, it explains that people often rely on promises instead of character, but promises are only as strong as the integrity of the person who makes them. Throughout life, individuals will be let down by broken promises, flattery, dishonesty, rejection, and unfair treatment, and these experiences can easily lead to bitterness, anger, and loss of fellowship with God if not handled properly.

The message emphasizes that believers must not place their trust in people to come through for them. Human beings have sin natures and will fail, but God’s integrity never fails. Instead of reacting emotionally when mistreated, believers are called to respond through faith, grace, and reliance on God’s promises. Reacting with resentment, gossip, or revenge leads to spiritual decline, while responding through the “faith-rest drill” allows God to handle the situation and brings spiritual growth.

Biblical examples like Joseph and Absalom are used to show the danger of trusting in human promises and the importance of learning to handle injustice. When people react to unfair treatment, they repeat the same tests in life. When they respond with faith and integrity, they grow and are promoted spiritually.

The message concludes by defining integrity as the spiritual strength to live out what one claims to believe. Integrity is maintained through confession of sin, the filling of the Spirit, grace orientation, doctrinal thinking, and personal love for God. A life of integrity brings stability, guidance, protection, happiness for one’s family, and a sense of destiny, while dishonesty and broken character eventually lead to ruin.
