Love Is NOT a Feeling — The Bible Says Something Shocking

Mar 11, 2026    Pastor Robert R. McLaughlin

What if most people completely misunderstand what the Bible means by love?

In today’s world, love is often described as a feeling, an emotion, or a powerful attraction between two people. But the Bible presents something far deeper. Scripture reveals that true biblical love is not based on emotion at all — it is a system of thinking produced by doctrine in the soul.

In this message we explore one of the most important distinctions in the Christian life: the difference between personal love and impersonal (agape) love.

Personal love focuses on the object. We love someone because of something attractive in them. But impersonal love, the love commanded in Scripture, focuses on the virtue within the believer. It is a love that does not depend on how others treat us, but on the character produced by God's Word in the soul.

This is why many relationships collapse. Personal love alone cannot sustain friendships, marriage, or human relationships. Without virtue love — the unconditional love produced through Bible doctrine — personal love becomes vulnerable to jealousy, arrogance, hypersensitivity, and disappointment.

But when a believer grows spiritually through doctrine, something powerful develops:

a relaxed mental attitude toward people.

This is the love that allows a believer to:

Love enemies

Handle criticism without bitterness

Maintain stability in relationships

Solve interpersonal problems without resentment

In fact, virtue love is one of the greatest problem-solving devices in the Christian life.

In this message you will discover:

• Why love is a system of thinking, not a feeling

• The difference between personal love and agape love

• Why most relationships fail without virtue love

• How Bible doctrine produces real love in the soul

• Why impersonal love gives believers stability with people

True biblical love is not learned through emotion or experience. It is learned through spiritual growth and the metabolization of God’s Word.

And when that happens, love becomes far more than a feeling — it becomes strength, stability, and spiritual maturity.
