Why You Still Struggle With Sin — Even After Salvation

Feb 20, 2026    Pastor Robert R. McLaughlin

This message explains the believer’s ongoing internal conflict between the old sin nature and the new nature received at salvation. The sin nature is described as having four main aspects: an area of weakness, an area of strength (human good and self-righteousness), a lust pattern, and personal trends shaped by environment and upbringing. Though the sin nature lives in the body, the soul is the battlefield where decisions are made about whether to follow God’s truth or give in to the flesh.

Paul’s struggle in Romans 7 shows that even mature believers experience this conflict. A person can desire to do what is right yet still find themselves doing what they hate when the sin nature controls the soul. This creates a “fragmented life” — confusion, inconsistency, and inner conflict. The issue is not merely individual sins, but the deeper principle of the sin nature influencing thoughts, actions, and motivations.

The message emphasizes that believers were born slaves to the sin nature through Adam, and while salvation provides freedom, true experiential freedom comes through knowing and applying Bible doctrine. Truth, not emotion or effort, sets a person free. Growth in doctrine strengthens the new nature, while neglect of doctrine strengthens the old nature.
