The Rock Was Only Meant to Be Struck Once…

In Numbers 20, Moses makes a mistake that seems small on the surface—but carries profound spiritual significance. Instead of speaking to the rock as God commanded, he strikes it again. Because of this, he is forbidden from entering the Promised Land.

Why was the consequence so severe?

Because this wasn’t just disobedience—it was a misrepresentation of the Cross.

From Exodus to Numbers, the Rock is a picture of Jesus Christ. The first time it was struck, it pointed to the Cross—where Christ would be judged for sin once and for all. But in Numbers 20, God tells Moses to speak to the rock, not strike it again.

Why?

Because the work of Christ does not need to be repeated.

👉 The Cross was sufficient.

👉 The payment was complete.

👉 The work was finished—tetelestai.

When Moses struck the rock a second time, he distorted one of the greatest doctrines in all of Scripture: the efficacy of the finished work of Christ.

This message breaks down:

Why the rock could only be struck once

The difference between salvation and fellowship

How the Old Testament reveals the Cross

Why you cannot add to what Christ has already accomplished

The danger of trying to “work” for what God has already done

This is more than a story about Moses—it’s a warning and a reminder:

⚠️ You cannot improve the Cross.

⚠️ You cannot add to grace.

⚠️ You cannot repeat what Christ has already finished.

💡 If you don’t understand this, you may spend your entire Christian life trying to do for God what He has already done for you.

✝️ Key Truth:

Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. (Ephesians 2:8–9)

📌 Scripture Covered:

Numbers 20

Exodus 17

Deuteronomy 3
