In this message we continue our study of the Open Doors of the Cross throughout Scripture and examine one of the most powerful Old Testament illustrations of the work of Jesus Christ — The Stricken Rock of Horeb (Exodus 17).
After being delivered from Egypt and witnessing numerous miracles, the children of Israel faced another test in the wilderness: there was no water to drink. Instead of trusting the Lord, the people complained, quarreled with Moses, and questioned whether God was even with them.
Yet once again, God responded with grace.
The Lord instructed Moses to strike the rock at Horeb, and when the rock was struck, water gushed out to sustain over two million people. This miraculous event was not just provision for physical thirst — it was a prophetic illustration of the Cross of Jesus Christ.
The Bible later explains the meaning of this event:
“They were drinking from a spiritual rock which followed them; and the rock was Christ.” — 1 Corinthians 10:4
Just as the rock had to be struck for water to flow, Jesus Christ was stricken on the Cross so that the waters of eternal life could flow freely to mankind.
This passage reveals several incredible principles:
• Every test in life is an opportunity to trust the Lord.
• Human failure never cancels God’s plan.
• The Cross is always God’s solution to sin, bitterness, fear, and failure.
• The “Water of Life” that satisfies spiritual thirst comes only through Jesus Christ.
Even though the people murmured, complained, and rebelled, God pointed them not to their failures — but to the Cross.
And the same is true today.
No matter the pressure, the solution remains the same:
The Cross of Jesus Christ.
